Reviewing 3 Eco-friendly Planters

You might have seen the other posts on repurposed planters: toilet roll planters & takeout napkin planters. It was part of my experiment for sustainable gardening.

As you can see in the picture, the comparison was between an egg carton planter, toilet roll planters, and takeout napkin planters. I was curious to see if they would work and to find out who they would be best suited for.

In this article, I’ll be reviewing 3 DIY Eco-friendly planters.

Egg Carton Planter

Pros:

The egg carton planter is the easiest to make. All you need to do is rip the lid off. No assembly or time is required. The best part is the already-made compartments. Unlike others, you can seed many plants at once.

Cons:

When it came to separating the compartments it was quite tricky. Since the carton was wet, it ripped unevenly. As a result, it caused erosion for the other parts that I wanted to keep in the seed starter kit.

Also, you may find a lack of creativity with this.

Toilet Roll Planters

Pros:

The toilet roll planter is very fun to make. It certainly stimulates most of your 5 senses.

When creating the bottom part, you almost feel like an engineer. When the bottom slits lock nicely, it gives instant satisfaction!

It is also solid and has a nice grip on it. As you can imagine, it’s very easy to transplant.

Cons:

Although it’s fun to make, it requires critical thinking for the bottom part to lock. Even after a temporal satisfaction, some won’t sit straight.

Takeout Napkin Planters

Pros:

This process provides you with a fun tactile experience, especially with water. In some ways, it’s therapeutic and stimulates your curiosity.

Just like the toilet roll planter, no mess for transplanting.

Cons:

Even before I made this, I had a bit of suspicion…What happens when I water it?

As long as you use a spray bottle, it should maintain its shape. But if you over water, the planter becomes soft. As a result, it may unfold and break.

It takes a lot of time to dry. In my case, it took a 2-napkin planter a whole day to dry. Adding more layers to make it solid means it will take longer to dry.

Which Eco-friendly planter is suitable for you?

All three planters worked well for germinating seeds. But after the experiment, I found out who would be best suited for making different planters.

For busy people or someone who just wants a quick result, go with the egg carton planter.

Anyone who wants to apply critical thinking or have a bit more of a challenge, make the toilet roll planter. Just be aware, that making the planter sit straight may drive you crazy!

For younger children or someone who enjoys the tactile experience, create the takeout napkin planter.

Mission Accomplished!

For the upcoming growing season, why don’t you create some eco planters? Then, you can grow your favourite fruit & veggies in your garden!

Just think of how beneficial it can be: making the eco planters, planting, caring, harvesting, and eating. It helps keep the health of your body and environment.

After this review,  hopefully, you know which planter is most suitable for you. So it’s time to get started!
